Ladies tresses
is another orchid that grows with Yadons piperia in the maritime
chaparral of Manzanita Park. In the first photograph shown, ladies
tresses is in the foreground, with a blooming Yadons piperia
in the back left. The flowers of ladies tresses are white like those
of Yadons piperia, but they do not have a spur and their petals
cling together to form a short tube rather than spreading wide.
Also like Yadons piperia, its flowers occur along a leafless
stalk. However, they occur in separate columns that spiral up the
stalk; this feature is most easily seen when the flowers are still
in bud. Ladies tresses can be hard to distinguish from Yadons
piperia when the plants are only in leaf. The leaves of Ladies tresses,
however, tend to occur in more upright clusters of more than 2 leaves,
whereas those of Yadons piperia are generally 1 or 2 and they
lay closer to the ground.
